Predestination verses Freewill

They have not know nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand (Is 44:18). Isaiah, by the Spirit of God, communicated a reality that gives insight into why not all can hear and understand the word of God. The truths of God are reserved unto those who are born of God (John 1:13; 1Cor 2:14, 15). One of the realities that has been hidden from those who cannot grasp it, is predestination. The plan of God according to his own will, is preordained, no one can add to or take away from it (Ecc 3:14Deut 8:3; Is 46:10; 55:11; Eph 1:11). The reality of predestination renders all of creation subject to a predetermined destiny designed by God. Even more, we are taught that this plan was established before the foundation of the world (Eph 2:10; 2Tim 1:9). The mystery of truth is held secret and available only to the children of God (1Cor 1:18; 2:7; 2Pet 2:12). Although all hear the message of truth, only the children of God have the ability to receive what they hear. Look at the following passage:

John 10:24-28 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, how long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 JESUS ANSWERED THEM, I TOLD YOU, AND YE BELIEVED NOT: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. 26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

As we are continually shown in the bible, Jesus spoke the truth and demonstrated the works of God to many people. However, although God in the flesh taught truth, we find out that some were unable to comprehend the message. Even more so, the people who could not comprehend the message of the Christ, sought to kill Him. You may not realize it, but this very example unveils a truth that God had revealed thousands of years before. Below, I have listed references in scripture that speak of the predestined reality of God. I must first warn you, the scriptures you are about to read may very well oppose what you currently know or believe to be true. However, per Paul’s communication:

2 Timothy 3:16 ALL SCRIPTURE is given BY INSPIRATION OF GOD, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

As we move forward, there may be some sacred cows, or commonly held beliefs, that you live by but are in need of correction. The following information starts with a word study from the Greek Origin. The Greek and transliterated version of the word is provided along with the definition. In some cases the same Greek word is translated differently in certain scripture references, but it is the same word. Also, in order to dispel any confusion, I have listed the Strong’s number beside the word to clarify. For example, the word PROGINOSKO is translated FOREKNEW in Romans 8:29, but FOREKNOWN in 1Peter 1:20. In both cases, it is the same Greek word PROGINOSKO. Keep this in mind as we move forward.

Foreknew (PROGINOSKO 4267)

1.     To have knowledge beforehand

2.     To foreknow, of those God elected to salvation

3.     To predestinate

Rom 8:29 For those He “FOREKNEW 4267,” He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the first born among many brethren.

Rom 11:2 God has not rejected His people whom He “FOREKNEW 4267.” Or do you not know what the scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?

1Pet 1:20 For He was “FOREKNOWN 4267” before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you.

If you look at number 2 for the above definition of PROGINOSKO translated FOREKNEW, it actually says that GOD ALREADY KNEW AND ELECTED THOSE FOR SALVATION. Romans 8:29 says that he predestined those he FOREKNEW 4267. What is this communicating to us? More importantly, if the scriptures are to be believed, what is this verse communicating to us about the freewill doctrine many are taught from childhood?

The freewill doctrine I am referring to, is the message that teaches that we must either choose Jesus as Lord or go to hell. I must admit, as a kid, my focus was not really on Jesus when I was taught this freewill message of condemnation (2Cor 3:9). Honestly speaking, I was focused on the not burning in hell for eternity part. In that regard, if I had been told you must believe in a goat in order to escape hell, out of fear, I would have said I believe in a goat. Once again, the key issue that I was most concerned with, was the staying out of hell part. Notice, this message causes the person to be completely consumed with what he/she  has to do,rather than salvation being a work God did. According to scripture, the salvation of God was settled before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4; 2Thes 2:13; 2Tim 1:9). Per demonic design, the focus on saving self, hinders the child of God from realizing an inheritance of salvation that requires no effort (Eph 1:18). The simple answer, is that you cannot follow after Christ if you are focused on self. So, once again, what is this scripture communicating to us? In Romans 8:29, we find that   the freewill doctrine being taught by many today is error. When the child of God is living life based on a false supposition, or what they suppose to be true, the result is a lack of spiritual development. The lack of spiritual development means not seeing God Almighty for who he really is, and therefore not understanding our inheritance of salvation in Christ.  Judging by the fact that this same freewill doctrine is the most prevalent teaching in the church, it means that we have a church filled with babes and unlearned in the scriptures of truth (1Cor 3:1; Heb 5:12-14). I am not pointing fingers at men/women, the truth is that until the Father releases the anointing for our deliverance, we will be continually held back by our naivete (Acts 26:18). However, per Paul’s example on the road to Damascus, all the children of God will have their appointed time of revelation. I believe that we are at that time, and that the truth of the Gospel will not only be preached by the anointing of God, but the ears that hear will be anointed to hear and receive. It all starts with the fundamentals, which I believe to be the child of God’s understanding of their eternal salvation and how it was obtained (Heb 6:1, 2).

One of the most important truths that the child of God learns by the Spirit of God, is how their eternal salvation was secured. The following definition of the word predestined helps us to understand this truth. See the following:

Predestined (PROORIZO 4309)

1.     To predetermine, decide beforehand

2.     In NT of God decreeing from eternity

3.     To foreordain, appoint beforehand

According to the definition above, take a minute to consider what predetermine and to decide beforehand, means in regards to your salvation. Also, think about God decreeing something from eternity or before the world was formed, in regards to your salvation, and let that resonate within you. The idea that the word predetermined conveys to the child of God, if understood, is life changing in regards the understanding of eternal salvation. In the following scriptures, we will see how God Almighty actually planned your salvation, before the world was formed. Furthermore, the fact that the work of salvation was done before your existence in the earth, means it was done without your knowledge or consent. If you understand that, you can understand why the gospel of Christ, is called the gospel of peace. What would your life be like, if you believed God loved you so much, that he took care of your salvation before you understood you needed it? What would your life be like, if you understood that you cannot be taken out of God’s hand (John 10:28, 29)?  We are predestined according to God’s will, unto salvation. This is important, because when God declares a thing, not one word will return unto Him void (Is 55:11). In other words, if understood correctly, it is a guarantee of the child of God’s safety. See the following verses where the word predestined is used by the Spirit of God.

Acts 4:28 (NASB) For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose “PREDESTINED 4309” TO OCCUR.

In the above scriptures, we see that although the cross of Christ seemed as if it was a disaster to the disciples (Luke 24:15-25), it was actually the predestined plan of God (Acts 4:28). Once again, think about what is being revealed to the child of God. Although it looked as if the enemy was successful in his desire to destroy Christ, it was actually a prearranged plan. It is important that you understand this predestined reality. When we as the children of God understand our identification in Christ, we understand that as he is, so are we in this world (1John 4:17).  If God predestined Jesus’ life, than so are we in this world, as Christ seed (Gal 3:29), predestined. See the following:

Rom 8:29, 30 For those whom He FOREKNEW 4267, He also “PREDESTINED 4309” conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He “PREDESTINED 4309” these He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Child of God, what I am about to uncover is a mystery held secret by God, since before the foundation of the world (1Cor 2:7). This very same wisdom was predestined by God for you and I to learn by revelation, during this appointed time period. This wisdom, in some cases, was never known by many of our ancestors before us (Eph 3:5). Paul revealed this mystery, and it was also taught by the other apostles during their time. However, although the message was preached and the mystery taught, according to the planned times and seasons of God, the mystery has not been fully received by the church. Paul along with the other apostles, declared it during their time but the full reception of this revelation corporately, is upon us during our time. Think about what was revealed to Daniel, by the angel of God. Daniel was told things that were not to be revealed during his time, but were unveiled in later generations (Dan 12:4). The fact that God has revealed this truth to me, means that he has revealed this truth to other children of God. The results of this revelation, has taught me my true identity in Christ. If it taught me, than this same revelation is teaching other children of God throughout the world. Let’s dig into Romans 8:29 to further uncover this great mystery.

Romans 8:29  for those whom He FOREKNEW 4267, He also “PREDESTINED 4309” conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;

You will notice that the word FOREKNEW (PROGINOSKO 4267) is used in this verse. Previously we found out that this word means: to have knowledge beforehand; to foreknow, of those God elected to salvation; to predestinate. So we could read it:

Rom 8:29 for those whom God predestinated unto salvation, He also “PREDESTINED 4309” conformed to the image of His Son, so that He (His Son) would be the first born of many brethren;

The next step is to look at what it says about those whom God foreknew/predestinated unto salvation:

He (God the Father) also PREDESTINED 4309 them CONFORMED 4832 to the image of His Son

Here it is child of God, the key to a changed life. As I mentioned previously, it is not that this message has not been declared beforehand, because it has. However, the revelation of the message preached, I believe, is now upon us. I am merely communicating what was communicated to me by God. Just as God communicated the revelation of this mystery to me, it is He that will enlighten your heart as well. With that said, pay attention to the statement, He also PREDESTINED them CONFORMED to the image of His Son. Now consider the word CONFORMED and what it means:

·      having the same form as another, similar, conformed to

·      jointly formed

At first glance, the word conformed does not seem to add much, but as we dig further, things become more apparent.  The message taught today, infers that a person becomes conformed to or identified with Christ after making a decision for him. This is the basis of the freewill teaching. However, Rom 8:29 tells us that we WERE PREDESTINED CONFORMED.

Romans 8:29 for those whom He FOREKNEW 4267, He also “PREDESTINED 4309” CONFORMED 4832 to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;

Can you see it? “So that He would be the firstborn of many brethren;” child of God, this is the in Christ revelation. This is what it means to be in Christ before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4). When Jesus was brought forth, we were literally within him, and therefore joint together. Adam created from the Image of God, and who is the Image of God? Jesus is the Image of God (Heb 1:3 ). Jesus Christ is our origin, when He was formed, we were within Him. Can you see how this destroys the idea of choosing him? The freewill doctrine taught today, is a message of orphans coming to God to be saved. The message of the gospel, is a message of God’s children from the beginning, realizing, or coming to know by experience, a salvation that has always been in our possession through inheritance. The child of God does not have to gain salvation, we do however, have to gain revelation of what we already have. Once our mind is renewed to the salvation that is already present, we experience the salvation of our souls. Once again, we already had salvation, it is the revelation of it however, that causes the life change. With this in mind, we can now understand what Jesus meant when He spoke about the children that God had given Him (Heb 4:13). We can understand what Jesus meant when he said, that we were not of this world (John 15:19). We are as he was when he was brought forth, and therefore are as he is now at the right hand of the Father. We are genuinely, because of our origin in Christ before the foundation of the world, not of this world. One of the definitions of brethren used above, is having the same national ancestor. In other words, we, just as our Father Jesus the Firstborn of all creation, are of the lineage of God the Father. This reality is why we are called the children of God. Do you remember what God told Jeremiah? Before you were in the womb I knew you (Jer 1:5). Also, now when you read Gen 1:26, when it says let us create man in OUR IMAGE and LIKENESS we can understand the truth of this statement. The bible says Jesus is the image and the likeness of God the Father (Col 1:15; Heb 1:3). Now we can understand, the child of God was jointly formed in the image of the Son (Rom 8:29). Think about it child of God, Jesus is the express image of the Father, and we are the express image of Jesus. This is the mystery of our inheritance in Christ since before the foundation of this world. Can you see the reality of our inheritance?  Remember, this is a PREDESTINED reality, therefore, this truth did not happen as a response to a confession for Jesus Christ. This reality was a planned salvation by right of our inheritance in Christ, before the foundation of the world. As you mediate and study on this, I pray that the Father would cause this truth to become clearer by the leading of the Spirit.

Now that we have uncovered the true identity of the child of God and our origin, we can dig into other verses that reveal our predestined reality.

Predetermined (HORIZO 3724)

1.     To define, to mark out the boundaries or limits (of any place or thing), to determine, appoint that which has been determined according to appointment, to ordain

·      For every place you see 3724, it is the word HORIZO translated PREDETERMINED. While reading the following scriptures especially

Luke 22:22 you will notice that the word DETERMINED is used. This is the same HORIZO 3724 word that is defined as PREDETERMINED. Why is this important? It actually communicates to us what Jesus believed. See the next verse.

Luke 22:22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was “DETERMINED 3724”: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

Now read it inserting the word PREDETERMINED.

Luke 22:22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was “PREDETERMINED 3724”…

If Christ Himself walked a PREDETERMINED path, are we somehow greater and able to live by a different reality? Can we do something the creator of heaven and earth could not do (John 1:3; Eph 3:9)? Absolutely not! According to the will of God, and His timing, we can understand what Jesus meant when he boldly declared, “I can of mine own self do nothing (John 5:30).” This message, is in stark contrast to the message of choice for salvation. To be clear, the child of God does chose Jesus as Lord, however, this admission is merely the fruit of what is already within the child of God. A tree produces fruit, not because of choice, but because it is what it is destined to do. As we explore more scripture, according to the Father’s will, I pray that the eyes of our hearts be enlightened to the truth of this message of Christ.

Acts 2:23 Him, being delivered by the “DETERMINATE 3724 or PREDETERMINED” counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

In Acts 2:23 Peter said that Christ was delivered by the PREDETERMINED 3724 counsel and foreknowledge of God. This statement is actually a confirmation of what was spoken in the book of Isaiah. Isaiah 53:10 says that it pleased God to bruise Him and put Him to grief.

Acts 10:42 And He commanded us to preach unto people, and to testify that it is He which was “ORDAINED 3724 or PREDETERMINED” of God to be the Judge of the quick and the dead.

Once again, Acts 10:42 is saying that Jesus was PREDETERMINED of God…

Acts 17:26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath “DETERMINED 3724 or PREDETERMINED” the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation:

Acts 17:31 Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath “ORDAINED 3724 or PREDETERMINED”; whereof He hath given assurance unto all, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.

Rom 1:4 And “PREDETERMINED 3724” to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

Heb 4:7 Again, he “PREDETERMINED 3724” a certain day, saying in David, today, after so long a time; as it is said, today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.

In the mouth of two or three witnesses let the matter be established. Jesus, Peter, Paul, and the writer of Hebrews all witness about the same predetermined reality. See for the following for proof:

Foreknowledge (PROGNOSIS 4268)

1.     Forethought, pre-arranged

Acts 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and “FOREKNOWLEDGE 4268” of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

1Pet 1:2 Elect according to the “FOREKNOWLEDGE 4268” of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

Just as God Almighty had a plan for Jesus, He has predetermined our lives and thereby our eternal destinies. Once again, the scripture says that in the mouth of two or three witnesses let the word be established (Deut 19:15). See the following scriptures:

Is 46:10 (NIRV) BEFORE SOMETHING EVEN HAPPENS, I ANNOUNCE HOW IT WILL END. In fact, from times long ago I announced what was still to come. I say, ‘My plan will succeed. I will do anything I want to do.’

Predestination teaches that God alone has predetermined either eternal salvation or damnation for each individual. The following passage in Romans includes writings from Moses, Malachi, Isaiah, and lastly Paul and all are in agreement. See following passage:

Rom 9:10-24 10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would [a]stand, not [b]because of works but [c]because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” 14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! 15 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed [d]throughout the whole earth.” 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. 19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?” 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel [e]for honorable use and another [f]for common use? 22 [g]What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience VESSELS OF WRATH PREPARED FOR DESTRUCTION? 23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.

In strict contrast to the message of predestination taught in scripture, the freewill doctrine claims that a person’s individual decision determines their ultimate destiny. As a result, the mantra, choose Jesus or go to hell.  If that doctrine is true, then what about Jacob and Esau? Contrary to what was demonstrated with Jacob and Esau in the above passage, the freewill doctrine teaches that our destinies are changed by our own decision or works. Once again, in the above passage it actually reveals the opposite reality regarding Jacob and Esau, as well as Pharaoh. The scripture clearly shows that Jacob and Esau’s destinies were set even while in their mother’s womb. See the following verse:

Rom 9:11-13  for though the twins were NOT YET BORN AND HAD NOT DONE ANYTHING GOOD OR BAD, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would [a]stand, not [b]because of works but [c]because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

Child of God remember this statement, THE CHOICE FOR SALVATION IS NOT A CONDITION OF OUR SALVATION BUT A RESULT OF IT. In explanation, if God according to scripture predetermined salvation for the child of God, then the resulting action will be a response to Christ by that child. The fact that God has planned the beginning from the end is not a intellectually acceptable idea. The carnal mind cannot perceive the power of grace. The carnal mind is enmity towards God and therefore adverse to the plans of God. Spiritual truth is received by revelation alone, the natural mind or the mind dominated by the natural mind disregards the gospel of grace as foolishness.

In an effort to uncover the grace of God, and how it is designed in such a way that no one can take credit it but God, consider Jacob. Jacob was chosen and Esau was not. So, after they were born and Jacob was blessed by God, could he ever claim the credit for obtaining the salvation he experienced? Notice, there is no room for boasting in this scenario, the child of God’s response to Christ is an unintelligible and instinctual response, to the destiny already established within him or her from the womb.  The child of God, like a seed, merely grows into his/her salvation, with all credit going to the creator of the seed (Matt 13:37, 38). Compare that to the assertion the freewill message teaches, which puts the responsibility of salvation on man, and thereby the credit for the decision. It is as foolish as giving a bird credit for its ability to fly, or a fruit tree praise for bearing fruit. Notice, there are those in the world that do this type of idol worship, worshiping the creature rather than the Creator (Rom 1:25). As long as the child of God is bound in the darkened reality of freewill for salvation, spiritual growth is hindered. The freewill doctrine actually teaches the worship of self, which is the basis of works for righteousness. If a person could actually rely on him or herself to acquire eternal salvation, it would actually make that person god. Why? Because, God Almighty is the only person who can claim this type of power to secure salvation. Can you see the deception involved in teaching this to the child of God? All of a sudden, the child of God is now in competition with God, verses a child who is totally dependent on Him for their life. Can you see the confusion this creates in the mind of the Christian?

In summation, the predestined reality is highly apparent to those of us with ears to hear and eyes to see what the Spirit of the Lord is communicating. This is a hard saying for some, because it means just as there are those born of God unto salvation, there are those among us who are born of the wicked one unto damnation.
